As work continues this spring on Graco Park, a bridge connecting downtown and Northeast Minneapolis will be closed for four months.

The Plymouth Avenue Bridge will be closed April 21 through Aug. 22 while crews establish a trail underpass connecting Graco Park and Boom Island Park. The Boom Island Marina is closed all year due to the construction of a pedestrian and bicycle bridge that will connect to trails through the underpass.

Maintenance will be performed to the Plymouth Avenue Bridge and safety improvements will be made at the intersection of Plymouth Avenue and Sibley Street as part of the project as well.

Boom Island’s parking lot will still be accessible from the Northeast side of Plymouth Avenue, according to a Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board spokesperson.

The 4,000-square-foot River Hub at Graco Park is expected to open by the end of April. Designed as a place for people to enjoy and appreciate the Mississippi River, the park building will offer environmental education opportunities, art and technology programs, and local arts performances.

The River Hub features public restrooms, an eight-person conference room, and a new Spark’d Studios location, where the Park and Rec Board will provide free media and arts programming to young Minneapolis residents, including use of a 3D printer.

Other trails and infrastructure were completed early last fall throughout Graco Park, a 9-acre riverfront park outside Graco Inc.’s headquarters.
