Vellee Deli is reopening in the skyway of the Baker Center next week following a short, temporary pause, but it sounds like the full-service restaurant is permanently closed in the Nicollet Island-East Bank neighborhood.

Over the weekend, owners Will Xiong and Joyce Truong announced that they were indefinitely closing both Minneapolis locations and a new Brooklyn Park pop-up, as they tried to work out a dispute over unpaid rent with their Northeast landlord. The couple launched a GoFundMe campaign that initially sought to raise $150,000 but has since been adjusted to $15,000.

“Despite our efforts, these negotiations honestly are not going our way. It’s clear that business is business, and we’re cutting through the fluff and seeing things for what they are,” Xiong and Truong said in their updated GoFundMe campaign. “This means we won’t be able to continue our plans there as we had hoped.”

Vellee announced in an Instagram post Thursday that it’s reopening in the skyway next Tuesday.

Xiong and Truong started Vellee Deli as a food truck in 2011 and opened their first store in the Baker Center in 2015. They expanded with Vellee on the ground floor the NordHaus Apartments at University and First avenues in 2022, three years after the couple signed a lease for the space. Just five weeks ago, Xiong and Truong launched a pop-up in Brooklyn Park, which was expected to run through October.

It’s unclear if or when the Brooklyn Park pop-up will reopen.

Vellee Deli is open in the downtown Minneapolis skyway 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Friday.
