Northstar Center’s 17-story west tower has reopened with updated offices, a spacious event venue, an upscale cafeteria, and a grab-and-go general store, all reminiscent of the era when the three-building complex was completed in downtown Minneapolis.

From sunburst clocks to checkerboard floors, mid-century modern design permeates the newly-renovated Northstar Center West, located at 625 S. Marquette Ave. It’s part of a larger overhaul of the entire Northstar Center complex, built in 1963, which also involves a commercial-to-residential conversion of the east tower.

New York-based c Capital paid almost $63 million cash for the distressed Northstar Center in late 2017. At the time, more than half of the west building was empty, about a year after Wells Fargo’s exit.

Taconic partnered with Polaris Developments Group on the redevelopment of Northstar Center West, where construction started in summer 2022.

Northstar Center West now features three floors of furnished “Skyboxes” and offers shorter, more flexible leases for those suites. Individual lounge memberships are available on a month-to-month basis as well.

“Everything that we’ve done has been with the intention of offering an experience that can’t be found working from home and with the intention of removing all of the inflexibilities and other reasons why companies have been reticent to commit to office space,” Polaris principal Matt Legge said in a statement.

There’s still about 300,000 square feet of contiguous office space on the upper floors available for an anchor tenant.

Office tenants can buy monthly memberships for and reserve a 9-hole putting course, known as the Northstar Golf Club, which also features two golf simulators and a clubhouse stocked with food and drinks. They also have access to multiple meeting rooms and lounges, a fitness center, and other amenities.

Those other amenities include an event venue, Northstar 8, which can host as many as 1,000 people for conferences, weddings, holiday parties, board meetings, and other gatherings of all sizes. There's also a 10,000-square-foot patio called the Skygarden that connects the east and west buildings on the eighth floor.

As for the building's public dining amenities, the Northstar Cafeteria has been reborn on the ground floor, along with a revival of longtime hot dog stand Walkin' Dog and a new addition in Krona Cafe.

The Northstar General Store is in the mix, too, for people who are looking for a grab-and-go option or needing to pick up an item for a meal at home.

Next door at Northstar Center East, 608 Second Ave. S, Sherman Associates is converting the 13-story former office tower into the Groove Lofts, a 216-unit apartment building, in partnership with Taconic.

Already completed in an earlier phase of the Northstar Center redevelopment were the 218-key Hotel Indigo and Star Bar & Bistro in the former Crowne Plaza Hotel building.

The complex's 7-story parking ramp also got upgrades.
