The Minneapolis City Council recently approved a bid for upgrades to the Minneapolis Convention Center.
Almost $13 million has been set aside for a second-phase remodel of convention center meeting rooms, according to public documents associated with the bid.
Ward 7 Councilmember Katie Cashman said in an Aug. 2 newsletter that the upgrades “will help Minneapolis stay competitive as a regional and national destination for major events.”
“The Convention Center is a major driver of economic activity and revenue for our city, and it is key that we continue to maintain critical City-owned assets like this one,” Cashman said. The convention center is located in Ward 7.

The convention center remodel bid, submitted by Sheehy Construction Company, got approval from the City Council and Mayor Jacob Frey at the beginning of August. But it almost got caught up in negotiations over Minneapolis police contract negotiations, as the council and the mayor figured out where they would pull money for police raises, according to MinnPost.
The $13 million in funding for the remodel is coming from the City's downtown assets fund, an umbrella fund largely from local taxes that supports public assets including the convention center, Target Center and Peavey Plaza, MinnPost reported.
The City of Minneapolis owns and operates the Minneapolis Convention Center. Meet Minneapolis, the City's convention and visitors bureau, markets the convention center for large-scale events.
The Minneapolis Convention Center is located at 1301 Second Ave. S in the Loring Park neighborhood.
