A popular wine bar and tapas restaurant with almost two dozen locations nationwide is finally making its way to the Midwest via the North Loop.
Barcelona Wine Bar will occupy at least part of 508 Washington Ave. N, a two-story brick building that’s attached to The Duffey apartment building.
A spokesperson for the brand confirmed on Tuesday that the location will open sometime in 2024 and will be the first in the Midwest. She said it's too soon to share any more information.
Earlier this month, the City issued a commercial inspection permit for the property, which indicates the buildout is expected to cost $1 million and the restaurant will hold as many as 168 people.
Barcelona Wine Bar's tapas are influenced by Spain, the Mediterranean and South America, where the company sources hundreds of bottles of wine, according to the website.
Barcelona Wine Bar launched in 1996 with a 38-seat wine bar in Norwalk, Connecticut. It’s since grown to 22 locations in 11 states: Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Massachusetts, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia and Washington, D.C.
Each of the Barcelona Wine Bar have their own executive chef, so menu items can vary between them. “We consider the concept chef-driven, and the food inspired by simply prepared market fresh cuisine, like you would find in the food stalls of the Boqueria Market in Barcelona or Central Market in Valencia,” the restaurant’s website reads.
The Development Tracker was first to share the news of Barcelona Wine Bar coming to the North Loop. That report cites job postings for front- and back-of-house leaders, including executive chef and general manager. One of the job listings says the restaurant is opening this summer, while others say 2024 more generally.
