There’s a new restaurant on St. Anthony Main from a familiar operator on the historic riverfront street.
Aster Cafe and Jefe Urban Cocina owner Jeff Arundel debuts his latest concept, Aster House, on Wednesday in the two-story Brown-Ryan Livery Stable building next to the Riverplace entrance and across from the Merriam Street Bridge.
Aster House is Arundel’s take on a 200-seat supper club and occasional music venue. Originally built in 1880, the restored space now features hand-painted murals, vintage light fixtures from Arundel’s personal collection, a custom-made stained glass arch, old theater seating, and other thoughtful touches.
St. Paul-based chef and restaurateur Karyn Tomlinson, who owns Myriel, worked with executive chef Josh Jones on the menu for Aster House, which focuses on fresh, local ingredients. Some of the highlights include gouda dinner rolls, wild rice croquettes, a sampling of snacks served on a lazy Susan, and banana toffee pudding. Like any good supper club, there’s also a huge pork chop on the menu, but this one is sourced from Hidden Stream Farms in Elgin, which supplied Tomilson with the Duroc pig that won her the Cochon 555, a national whole heritage-breed hog cookoff, in 2018.
Aster House will eventually add weekend brunch and a cocktail bar in the basement, which Arundel is considering only making accessible to people who know the password of the month.
Aster House is located at 25 Main St. SE, where it’s currently open Tuesday through Thursday from 5-10 p.m., Friday and Saturday from 5 p.m. to midnight, and Sunday from 5-10 p.m.
